Frog eat frog

Queensland resident Kerry Roberts discovered this act of frog cannibalism in her backyard.

Image: Townsville Bulletin

Keeping with our hoppy theme for a moment, Far North Queensland resident Kerry Roberts captured this amazing photo of a frog croaking it in her backyard pond. Ms Roberts heard a splash and frantic squals and thought a snake was at work.

Ms Roberts doesn't know how the striped green frog ate the tree frog as they were practically the same size. She said she loves her frogs and has hundreds in her garden.

When asked whether she found this act of cannibalism distressing she replied "It's Mother Nature so you don't interfere ... plus we have hundreds of frogs so it's expendable."

Frogs seem to be a major prey item for Cyclorana alboguttata. I have seen three eating frogs in the one night, and know many people who have seen or photographed similar events. Here's a photo I took of one eating a Spotted Marsh Frog (Limnodynastes tasmaniensis).

    Nice photo!

You might be on to something with that theory.

    Chris.
