Last surviving pair of wild Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbits breed
15th Jun 2007 06:53 AM
|
The Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbit is essentially a separate subspecies compared with other pygmy rabbits. Twenty were released into the wild in efforts to sustain the species. Two males left the study area and were recollected to go back into breeding programs.
The remaining rabbits succumbed to predation, leaving a single pair in the wild which has, finally, bred. Young kits were seen near the grass-lined burrow.
The cute little critters are barely the size of a man's hand. |
